A frameless shower screen is one of the defining details of a premium bathroom. Without the visual clutter of frames, channels, and bulky hinges, the glass appears to float — allowing tile work, stone, and fittings to take centre stage while the enclosure itself almost disappears.

Frameless versus semi-frameless
Understanding the distinction helps set expectations:
- Fully frameless — glass panels fixed with minimal hinges and clamps, no perimeter channel. Requires precise measurement and high-quality hardware. The premium option.
- Semi-frameless — glass panels with a slim channel or header bar. More forgiving of out-of-square openings but visually heavier.
- Framed enclosures — aluminium profiles on all edges. Functional and economical, but not the aesthetic this guide addresses.

Glass thickness and type
Frameless screens rely on the structural integrity of the glass itself:
- 8 mm toughened glass — the minimum for most frameless panels up to around 900 mm wide.
- 10 mm toughened glass — standard for wider panels, door leaves, and walk-in configurations where rigidity matters.
- Low-iron glass — reduces the green edge tint visible in standard toughened glass, particularly noticeable on clear or white tile backgrounds.
- Acid-etched or sandblasted glass — provides privacy without frames, ideal for family bathrooms or screens visible from bedrooms.
All glass must be toughened to BS EN 12150 and marked accordingly.
Configuration options
The layout of your screen depends on your shower footprint and wet room design:
- Single fixed panel — a walk-in shower with a partial screen. Clean and open, but requires adequate floor fall and drainage design to contain water.
- Inline panel and door — a fixed panel with a hinged door, the most common frameless configuration.
- Corner enclosure — two panels meeting at 90 degrees, with or without a door on one side.
- Wet room panels — partial screens that define the shower zone without fully enclosing it, often paired with linear drains and level-access floors.

Hardware and hinges
Hardware quality determines longevity and daily experience:
- Wall hinges — pivot or inline hinges fixed to the wall and door leaf. Must be rated for the weight of the glass panel.
- Glass-to-glass hinges — connect two panels at a corner without a vertical post.
- Handles and knobs — back-to-back handles through the glass, or pull handles in brushed nickel, chrome, matt black, or brass.
- Seals — magnetic or polycarbonate seals at the door edge and threshold to contain water without visible framing.

Sealing and water management
The most common concern with frameless screens is water escape. Proper specification and installation address this:
- Out-of-plumb tolerance — walls in period Hertfordshire properties are rarely perfectly vertical. We measure on site and allow for tolerances in hinge adjustment.
- Threshold seals — polycarbonate sweeps or clear strips at the door base.
- Floor fall — a minimum fall of 1:80 toward the drain is essential for walk-in configurations.
- Panel height — screens should extend at least 1,900 mm, or 200 mm above the shower head, whichever is greater.
These details are assessed during templating, which typically occurs once tiling is complete or near completion.
